I received an email asking, "I know exactly the kind of man I want. Why am I not finding him?" My answer was, "Perhaps by being so sure that you know what you want in a man you are overlooking some great possible partners. A wonderful gift may not be wrapped as you expect."

The principle of intent is not just applicable to dating, but is universal. Intention is a powerful force, but contains a hidden paradox.

If you have no idea what you want from life, you have no power to call anything important and satisfying into being. Therefore, envision your desire as a full color dream with surround sound. Make your dream very detailed, and so real you can smell and taste it.

However, Spirit has its own idea of what great gifts to give you. Once you have made your request, be open to receiving the bounty of the universe. Most likely, your gift will not look exactly as you visualized it. Be open to every phone call, every knock at the door. Most of us would just walk right past if we saw Jesus himself singing Christmas carols on the street corner.

The secret to accessing the power of intention is to follow two seemingly controdictory paths at the same time:

1. Visualize what you want. Plan and take positive action to achieve your goal.

2. Always be open to receiving the generous gifts of Spirit. Hold no expectations or demands on the form, the timing, or the color of the wrapping on the bountiful gifts of Spirit.

Affirmation: I am open to receiving the bountiful gifts of Spirit. My mind and heart are open.

Unanswered Prayers

Our prayers are always answered, but often God, or the Universe, knows what is best for us better than we do. Sometimes we are very sure that we know what we want, and what we want seems very important to us. Later in life, however, often we look back at those desires and wonder why they seemed so important at the time, or question why we wanted them at all. For example, in high school there may have been a boy or girl that we would have given anything to date. If only I could be Johnny's girl friend or Sally's boy friend. Later we look at Johnny's face on a wanted poster or hear about how Sally's life turned out and wonder what we ever could have been thinking.

Consider the distinction between affluence and riches. Affluence is a state of mind. I can perceive affluence regardless of my external circumstances. The Universe responds favorably when I request affluence. I receive the feeling of having everything I need. Sometimes I actually receive earthly riches. Always, I receive a satisfied feeling with whatever the Universe deems is best for me. Whether I receive financial gain or not, I truly receive affluence.

Whenever you turn to the power of prayer or to the "Law of Attraction" or to the power of intention, consider making your request more general and less specific. Ask for health, inner peace, love, and affluence, rather than asking for fewer wrinkles, a trip to Hawaii, a hot date, or a new car.

The "Law of Attraction" is a Half-Truth

Everything regarding the so called "Law of Attraction" is an opinion. There is no scientific basis whatsoever for the "law," as there is no scientific basis for anything else in metaphysics or in religion. Does that mean all of metaphysics is wrong? No, just unprovable.

Is intent - or intention - real? While not scientifically provable, intent is certainly very real in my personal experience, and the experience of many I know well.

My Intent is my transmission to the entire Universe. It is the way I speak my vision for the future. While I can "speak" anything to the Universe, many transmissions are not received or are diverted.

My compassionate intents are generally received clearly and acted upon - perhaps not immediately, or in exactly the way I hope- but acted upon favorably, nonetheless.

However desires that are neutral - such as my desire to win the lottery - are just ignored. Further, my harmful or "evil" desires are not only rejected by the Universe, but are mirrored back to me as intense personal suffering - essentially Hell-on-earth.

The usual expression of the "Law of Attraction" states that the Universe will give you ANYTHING you want. That is half-true in that you can have anything that you request with compassion. The untruth is the expectation that the Universe will respond favorably when you ask selfishly or ask to harm others.

Consider the distinction between affluence and riches. Affluence is a state of mind. I can perceive affluence regardless of my external circumstances. The Universe responds favorably when I request affluence. I always receive the feeling of having everything I need. Sometimes I actually receive riches, and sometimes I receive that satisfied feeling with what the Universe deems is best for me. Either way, I truly receive affluence.

If you prefer to use the phrase "Law of Attraction," just remember that it will provide what you request with compassion, but not satisfy your hurtful or greedy requests.
