There will be a few times when you are kind to someone and they are unkind to you in return, but generally, people repay kindness. Even as small an act as smiling at the bank teller will be rewarding.
More importantly, the kind energy that you radiate into the world is returned manyfold. Some label it karma, but whatever you call it, the effect is very real.
